Daydream-Worthy Item No. 2

Oh DailyCandy, you are dangerous!

There I was, minding my own business, puttering away like a good worker bee when I happened to notice that I'd received new mail. Now I know I shouldn't be checking my personal email at the office (although I challenge you find me someone who doesn't... I bet they're boring), but it was DailyCandy's weekly Travel installment and I couldn't resist and quite frankly I'm glad I didn't.

Boy, was this one a doozy! Thanks to this little email, I now know of Black Tomato and am dreaming happy safari dreams.

Disclaimer: These are pretty pricey jaunts, especially after you throw in the exchange rate, but my-oh-my they sure do sound sublime!

Daydreaming

I have a confession to make.
I seriously considered deleting this blog.

This whole having a full-time job thing has really thrown a monkey wrench in my plans to explore the world. Which in turn means I don't have any fabulous trips to report about here. I am, of course, NOT complaining about being employed (only an idiot would in this economy), but it has made life, well, not so exotic.

Since in some sense however, maintaining this blog is inspiration for me to keep on traveling or at least daydreaming about it, I've decided to keep it around and instead include more of the miscellany the tag-line of this blog suggests would be included and more daydream-worthy items, if not actual adventure.

So... Daydream-Worthy Item No. 1: Jetsetter.com
It's Gilt Groupe's take on travel, i.e. luxury deals. Music to my ears.

VAY to the CAY T-I-O-N

Law school = done
MA bar exam = done
...and for the next 3 weeks, I am free to do whatever the heck I please (within reason of course)!!

Seeing that this is a blog about travel, it would only make sense for me to do as much. My original plan was to be a conscientious world citizen and participate in a volunteer vacation of some sort, but that's not going to happen... at least not now. (Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't support volunteering, etc. I'm just not in the mental place I need to be to truly enjoy it and thus provide a meaningful contribution.)

Instead, I'm teaming up with Intrepid Travel again; this time to travel through Central America. (I used them last year for my trip through Cambodia, via Bangkok & Ho Chi Minh City.) Our trip will begin in Guatemala where we'll explore Antigua, Flores and the Tikal ruins. Leaving Guatemala, we will cross the border into Belize and spend a few days first in San Ignacio then on Caye Caulker, before crossing into Mexico (our third and final country), where we'll visit the Tulum ruins and relax at the resort town of Playa del Carmen, near Cancun. The trip will span two weeks and I fully anticipate being wonderfully brown and well rested when it's all said and done!

But wait, there's more! Those two weeks are only a part of my fantastically relaxing vacation before I return to Boston and the real world of work and responsibility. After I leave Mexico, instead of heading to the east coast, I'll be heading up to the SF bay area to spend the week with a certain someone. Although, I don't imagine the weather will be all that spectacular, I'm really looking forward to the company and, of course, the obligatory day trip to wine country. Because he will actually have responsibilities during some of the days, I'm going to use the opportunity to truly play tourist and explore the city/environs more than I have in my past few trips... and if I'm feeling talkative, I may even blog about it.

Ok, that's all for now. I have a long list of errands beckoning me and I can only put them off for so long.

Post Bar trip planning

It appears that with the return to the U.S., I've all but forgotten about this blog. That's not very nice, I'll admit... so, in the interest of proving that I really am a master-procrastinator, it's only appropriate that I update this baby with my next major vacation plans. (I say "major" because I will be traveling home to the Bahamas for the holidays but that's a given and no where near as exciting as previous travels I've had.)

Following the holidays, I'll have the "pleasure" of returning to frigid Boston to take Barbri and study for the Massachusetts bar. It does has the nickname "Pass-achusetts" but I'm anal and I know I'll hole myself up in a library somewhere for the entirety of January and February madly cramming law principles that I won't need beyond that bar exam into my head. It's therefore completely justifiable that I reward myself with some crazy, exciting post-bar trip somewhere exotic before I have to return to the real world and actually be an attorney.

I've been throwing around a ton of ideas, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous... such as, spending three weeks camped out on a beach in the DR sipping pina coladas and bringing on certain premature aging, if not skin cancer... to embarking on a worldwind round-the-world tour. Now, I haven't totally written off either of these options, but I did recently come across an alternative vacation plan that I am very seriously considering and that's spending the three weeks volunteering abroad.

Thanks to the good ol' ads on facebook, I ventured onto the website for Cross Cultural Solutions. They have a variety of different options available and more than likely I'd participate in the traditional "volunteer abroad" program somewhere in Central/South America. This way, I'd gain exposure to a new culture in a manner I have never before experienced meanwhile have the opportunity to explore a new country at the same time. It certainly appeals to my conscience, even if cost-wise it's arguably as expensive as taking a regular vacation to a third world country of your choice.

Anyway, right now I'm looking to spend the three weeks between Feb 27 and Mar 22 in either Brazil (Salvador), Costa Rica (San Carlos), or Peru (Ayacucho). I'm also half-heartedly considering Tanzania (Kilimanjaro) but I fear that the flight time and general jet lag would not make this particular option all that feasible for me. Any thoughts are more than welcome.

The best time to shop for US flights

This article offers useful advice RE: buying plane tickets courtesy of the Boston Globe.
Apparently, Mondays (starting at 3pm) through Wednesdays (presumably until midnight, although no time is given).
